Australians love the beach and are blessed with the finest coastline in the world. But because our coastline is so vast, it can’t all be patrolled by lifeguards, rangers and people who can identify sharks and other hazards to swimmers and beach goers.
To combat the risks of shark attack on unpatrolled beaches, several local councils teamed up with the WA Department of Fisheries. They wanted to utilise tagged sharks and seabed sensors plus smart drumlines to signal an alert when sharks were near unpatrolled beaches.
The alert then triggered high-powered spoken warning messages and visual alerts to surfers and other beach users so they knew a shark was in the area. This was all done remotely. Cameras were then used remotely to confirm that beach users were leaving the water.
When a vehicle strikes a bridge, it’s not only dangerous, it also disrupts traffic, creating further hazards.
We developed a custom sensor for a specific bridge that vehicles all too often collide with. Our solution incorporated solar power, battery, communications technology, and an accelerometer. We combined this with a separate video camera to identify bridge strike situations.
When a truck or other ‘excessively high’ vehicle comes into contact with the bridge, the accelerometer registers the impact. It then wirelessly notifies the camera system and starts streaming images and alerts to transport authorities. The cost of installing this fully wireless, solar-powered solution was very low.
